I love reading novels that are based on true stories, people and places. Until Next Sunday is the story of two young adults learning what it means to trust and fall in love with someone when it seems the universe is working against them. Rosina has come to American for a better life, then in Italy. She has a brother and sister-in-law already with roots in the country and now it is her chance of a lifetime, an opportunity many could only dream about. But during this time, life on the other side of Lady Liberty is not as grand as it has been made out to be. The Great War has just ended and many are struggling and so when Rosalina gets invited to a gathering, she can hardly say no – as it cannot hurt to forget about the struggles for a few hours, and just live a bit.
This gathering is just the beginning of a wonderful love story. Rosina meets Gianni, also known as John to all of his, and the two hit it off. Rosina is shy and still learning the way of life in America and Gianni has caught her eye and asks to see her again. Excitement and hesitation, Rosina agrees and has the most fun day she has ever had in her life, maybe life in America isn’t as bad as it seems. The two quickly become smitten with one another and agree to more dates when Rosina becomes very ill. Afraid for her life and the safety of those in his household, her brother takes her to the hospital and Rosina feels to be on the brink of death.
This is the first of many times that the faith of Gianni and Rosina are tested through out her tumultuous sickness that seems to keep a hold on her. Through the letters they write, they keep faith, trust and their relationship growing as Rosina fights to heal and stay healthy and Gianni is doing everything he can to visit her and save for a future for them. But will there be a future? Rosina has nothing but time on her hands to think and wonder what Gianni is doing with his time, while another person has his eye on Rosina and attempts to win her heart.
This story was beautifully written and I really loved how the letters were woven into this story. I feel love letters were so personal and really showed the true personality of someone, as often this was how forbidden feelings and words were construed, as life during this time was very different for a woman. Thank you to WOW! Women on Writing for the invite and to the author for sending me a free copy of her novel. I love that she wanted to share her families love story with the world.
I’m excited to announce the WOW! Women on Writing book blog tour with author and Audry Fryer and her book Until Next Sunday.
This book is written with so much heart – you can’t help but fall in love with the characters from this historical romance!
~ Book Blurb~
After bravely leaving the life she knew to come to America,
illness threatens Rosina’s happily ever after.
When separated, will letters keep their love alive?
Rosina leaves Italy to build a better life, but the reality in America is nothing like the dream. She is far from the Italian countryside and the beautiful olive groves where she grew up. Here the work is endless, and the winters are cold and desolate. She never expects to find love in such a place.
Then she met him. Gianni, the shoemaker’s apprentice, is gentle, handsome, and everything she never knew she needed in her life.
But when Rosina falls ill and is quarantined, their future is at stake. All she can do is cling to the beautiful letters Gianni writes. Each week she tries to survive the long, lonely days until next Sunday for his brief visit.
Will fate bring Rosina and Gianni together once more? Or are they destined to remain star-crossed forever?
Until Next Sunday is a sweet Historical Romance inspired by a true story. It is based on actual Italian love letters which were discovered a century after they were written (some of which are contained in this book.) It is a portrait of the times, and a true immigrant experience. Feel the force with which these two lives find love, against all odds.
