This was such a deep story, based on true people and historical events that happened. This was such a good read! While heading for a new life in the west, Maggie’s family was attacked in a wagon train raid and she was kidnapped and became Eyes-Like-Sky, and eventually taken as a wife. She was treated well by her husband and assimilated herself into being a part of the tribe. Captain Ramsey, not wanting to follow in his fathers footsteps, enrolled at West Point and has been assigned to the Texas frontier where he finds himself in the midst of the Indian War. The decision or life or death only takes a split second and when he kills Dancing Eagle, the husband of Eyes-Like-Sky and realizes he almost also killed this woman and small baby he is besides himself. He knows his life has changed and will forever be changed when he makes a promise to himself and this woman. He will do everything to protect her and her now fatherless child, Little Star. With the US also on the brink of the Civil War, he may have just made a promise that will be impossible to keep. This novel had so much to it! So many characters and storylines and it was all wound beautifully! I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to more in this series.
