Excerpt:
Annie pondered how the man’s eyes were kind and not hardened like how she
imagined an outlaw’s would be, not that she had ever seen an outlaw before. Yet, the
man—rather a boy—held no shame in stealing what belonged to others. She couldn’t
tell his age, but surmised he wasn’t much older than she, probably about the same age as Zeb. He was dressed in clothes in need of a good washing. She did a double-take when she saw his right hand. A lengthy scar covered nearly his entire hand and was raised and red. How long had it been there? Was a knife fight on the streets of an
unkempt Wild West town to blame? Had this man won the knife fight? She trembled at
the thought of the demise of his opponent.
She glanced again at his gun. Would a gunfight take place here on the open prairie
with no one to save them? God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in
trouble.
Entranced by the prominent scar, Annie couldn’t take her eyes off of his
disfigurement, the sight now fully embedded in her memory.
She was a prisoner in the wagon. Thoughts of what she should do cluttered her
mind. Annie released a long-held breath
“Please—please don’t hurt me,” she stammered.
