A Fire in the Night by Christopher Swann

Nick, a retired professor has hibernated himself in the North Carolina mountains. He has created a small sanctuary away from everyone else, no internet, no cell phone, and he is ok with that. Still reeling from the loss of his wife he is slowly coming to terms each day with his new life alone, until a sixteen year old claiming to be his niece shows up one night.

His little sanctuary has been disturbed- his brother and his wife died in a house fire, this unknown niece is on the run and things from the past are quickly coming back into Nick’s life. Everything he worked so hard to leave behind, has once again found him and now he must find out the truth, face his past and come to terms with what his brother really did.

This was a really good thriller. With each chapter the author leaves another clue from the past that gives another piece to what really happened to his brother and why his niece is on the run. It was a fast paced read from the first page. Thank you to Crooked Lane Books for sending me a free copy.

~ About the Novel~

Acclaimed Southern mystery master Christopher Swann delivers “a book that’s literary fiction, a spy novel, and a relentless thriller all in one” (Lee Goldberg, New York Times bestselling author), perfect for fans of Linwood Barclay and Michael Farris Smith.

Nick Anthony has retreated to the North Carolina mountains to mourn the untimely death of his wife. Once a popular professor, Nick just wants to be left alone with his grief. But when his estranged brother and sister-in-law die in a house fire, a stunned Nick learns he has a niece, Annalise, who is missing.

At the scene of the crime, the men who set the fire have realized Annalise, and the information they are looking for, got away. Feverish and exhausted, she stumbles onto her uncle’s porch, throwing Nick into the middle of the mystery of her parents’ death and the dangerous criminals hunting her down.

Hired to retrieve the stolen information at any price, private military contractor Cole and his team track Annalise to Nick’s cabin. But Nick has a hidden past of his own—and more than a few deadly tricks up his sleeve.
