Their father, Kind Edward has barley given his last breath when the elder son, John is already barking orders about his announcement at officially becoming Throned. Alfred, John’s brother is terrified, and has been since realizing that this would be the outcome if something ever happened to their father. John is not fit to be a King. He does not understand people, nor the hard work that his father and grandfather had done to get the kingdom to run as it has. To be stable, and respected amongst the other kingdoms.
John has no regard, and if it were not for his mother Lady Alice, he would have had things accomplished that very day, as it was he would have not even given his father a proper grieve, with the people of the kingdom. John has come in as a whirlwind and replaced many a people his father had employed, who knew how to do their jobs and did them well.
John is only out for himself, and what will benefit him. He doesn’t even want his own wife, mother of his child in the same part of the castle as him. He has even cast her aside. As time moves on, and the truth of the matter is realized, plans are put into place that ultimately could get Alfred killed. Going against the King, is the ultimate betrayal, let alone the King being his own brother.
Word spreads amongst the other kingdom’s what John has done, the new rules he has enforced as well as Alfred has made some new allies and friendships. Lady Alice has a few tricks up her owns sleeves, and helps guide Alfred with decisions that will benefit and potentially protect them all in the future. King Edward, was also no fool and left Alfred some guidance as well. Will the new King John elicit a war with the decisions he has made, will his own people turn against him, will the Kingdom turn to ruin?
Thank you to Black Rose Writing, Wow! Women on Writing for inviting me to this tour, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my review. I really enjoyed this novel, it was easy to read and a fast read. It will be interesting to see the next Chronicles of the kingdom.

Book Summary
At the dawn of the Renaissance, Alfred – the eponymous second son – must discover the special destiny foreseen for him by his grandfather. Now, the unthinkable has happened: Alfred’s brother is king. And it isn’t long before everyone’s worst fears are realized. Traditional allegiances are shattered under a style of rule unknown since the grand bargain that formed the kingdom was struck over two hundred years ago. These will be the most dangerous years of Alfred’s life, forcing him to re-examine his duty to personal honor and to the kingdom, while the threats posed by his brother constantly remind him of his father’s final words of advice. What choices will he have to make to try to protect the things he holds most dear?
